Why we created the Human–AI Compact
This site goes live amid a mass explosion in the use of AI. We are not against using technology for accelerating human potential, but we are seeing that it changes the way people relate to one another, both at work and in our personal lives. We think these changes are troubling because they diminish ourselves and demean others. We felt it was time to state clearly, to the people we care about, what we believe and what we stand for in relation to the use of AI.
This compact comprises eight principles that we agree to follow in our own use of AI. The principles may change in the future as we continue to observe and reflect on how AI shapes what it means to be human. As it stands today, these principles signal a shared commitment to those you work, live and engage with, to:
- Engage with them as a person
- Wish for them to engage with you as a person
- Use AI for deeper connection, not disconnection
The principles should be self-explanatory when you read them. If you agree with them, we encourage you to sign the compact and share your commitment with others. This site will help you do that by generating a link to the principles that you can place in your email footer or other communications.
We are passionate about being human and understanding the richness of human lives, experiences, loves, foibles, fallacies and achievements. We believe in the primacy of the human condition over technology — warts and all. To us, this means it’s ok to make mistakes, to air outlandish ideas with regular abandon, to be authentic, and to share this true self with others, inclusive of all the limitations that exposes in this age of AI.
We hope you will join us in this commitment and help make it a movement — at a critical time in human development and, as we see it, a transition to a fundamentally different world.
